Rise of Mom Entrepreneurs

March 12, 2010 by Blair Stover

For active moms who love working and spending time with their kids, a home-based business is an attractive option. That’s true for about 57 percent of women or mompreneurs who now have their own business or are planning to start one up. Experts say there are currently about 10 million mompreneurs already in the marketplace.

What drives these women to start their own business? Motivating factors include a great idea that cannot be ignored, lack of fulfillment in their present jobs, the thrill of taking big risks but probably the biggest factor is being at home closer to their children.

Even before the recession, the job market saw many women leaving corporate jobs to put up their own businesses. As many men lost jobs because of the bad economy, their wives were suddenly placed in the position of becoming the chief breadwinner of the family. This has led to the emergence of mompreneurs.

Fortunately, the recession has opened many new doors for a lot of women to start their own ventures. Elizabeth Gordon, author of The Chic Entrepreneur: Put Your Business in Higher Heels, said that entrepreneurship is a good way of creating opportunities out of hardships. Since necessity is the mother of invention, she thinks that women are perfect for giving birth to a idea and nurturing it into a successful business.

Gordon believes that women are great business owners since they are highly creative and amazing at handling multiple priorities. She said that all the skills learned in running a household can be transferred to the role of a small business owner.
