  1. Social Media Myths: Don’t Believe the Hype

    Do you believe that you must “do social media” even if you do not understand it or want it for your business?  Are you afraid that you are missing out because you are not posting continuously?  A recent Forbes article offers some insight into myths about social media.  See if any of these are thought-traps you have fallen into!

    1)       Everyone is using social media.  You will see statistics like “80 percent of all shoppers find their products on social media,” but remember that the targeted demographic always determines whether this is true.  Some demographics simply do not use social media or prefer other methods of finding their goods and services.

    2)      Social news aggregators have no value.  Facebook and Twitter may be kings, but Reddit, Stumbledupon, Digg and other social news aggregators also have their place.  In fact, the content most frequently shared on Facebook and Twitter actually originates on one of these social news aggregators.

    3)      You cannot do social media alone.  Yes, you can.  It just takes some practice and a little studying.

    4)      You have to spend hours a day on social media.  No, you do not.  You just have to effectively schedule your posts.  Programs like Hootsuite even allow you to do this in advance.

    5)      Social media is a broadcast channel.  You can get your customers to interact, rather than just talking to them, by offering specials, sweepstakes, prizes and other perks.

    6)      Social media replaces a website.  You cannot get rid of a good website just because you use social media.  Instead, the two should work together.

    7)      You cannot measure social media’s ROI.  You can track a lot of user activity through social media by using the right tools.

    8)      Blogging is time-wasting.  Blogging is not only easy but it sets a tone for your business and allows you to brand yourself as an expert in your field.

    9)      You have to be on all the social networks.  It is better to do one or two well than to do 15 poorly.

    10)  Social media replaces real-life contact.  There is nothing to be a face-to-face conversation or a phone call with your customers, including social media.

    The fact is that social media is a tool just like any other and can be used effectively or ineffectively.  Think about that the next time you are tempted to use SM because “everyone else is doing it!”

People use it for things ranging from catching up with old friends to expanding their business ventures. Whatever the case is, Facebook isn’t going anywhere and that is why you have to milk the social media for everything it is worth.

    1. Set up your shop. Why have a Facebook page? Because it is free. You have to understand that Facebook is a business just like any other online company. So, with that being said, it is just smart business for you to have a page.
    2. Greeting your guests. When a person visits your page, you want them to feel special so have a video greet them as soon as they land on your page.
    3. Offer incentives to people when they become “fans”. Give people discounts or early access to exclusive items when they become “fans”. This helps your business when people see how many “fans” you have.
    4. Give your “fans” reasons to come back. Provide steady, fresh content.
    5. Be considerate. Never spam your fans.
    6. Make things fun! Throw a party like its 1999! Your clients want to feel excited when they visit your page. Give them exciting reasons to come back. Throw some polls and contests out there.

    If you are not getting desired results with your YouTubemarketing, take action. According to Nielson, both mobile and Internet viewing have increased 20 to 35 percent over last year while traditional television viewing increased only fractionally over last year. This alone is an important reason to focus on your YouTube marketing. Try the following tips to maximize this marketing.Be aware that each minute, thirty-five hours of new video are uploaded into YouTube. This offers a huge amount of competition. This is exactly why you want to make the most of your YouTube marketing efforts. Firstly, create compelling videos. Your videos should address the needs of your intended audience. Consider what will be compelling, valuable and helpful to your prospective customers. Have your videos focus on slide shows, expert interviews, frequently asked questions, how-to’s, etc.

    Next, make your videos easy to find from within YouTube and outside of YouTube. Remember that Google owns YouTube. Videos frequently appear as first page results on search engines. You can essentially skip over your competition to the top of the results of a search page in this way. To make your video findable focus on the title, adding a colon after the initial key words, make your description as keyword-rich and descriptive as possible and tag all and any related keywords in the tags field.

    Create a branded experience. You can do this on YouTube without becoming a partner or paying out for a brand channel. By turning your channel into a destination, your YouTube channel can become a second home. Choose background colors that coincide with your branding. Make your layout in “Player View” and set your featured video to autoplay. Add a playlist of the videos that represent your products and services.

  4. Facebook Places vs. Foursquare

    Face it, some people need to let you know everything that they do (Blair Stover is now checking into Applebees, Blair Stover is now checking into Blair Stover’s home, etc), yet other people, like to contribute to a more accurate web.  Others still like to get discounts and promotions straight to their phone browser based on their location or what their “peers” are doing.  If either of these scenarios sounds like you, location-based Internet applications Foursquare and Facebook Places will satisfy your needs in similar ways.

    Both applications rely on the GPS (Global Positioning System) that is increasingly found on all but the cheapest of cell phones.  Your every move can be tracked if you set your privacy settings correctly (or incorrectly).  The problem is that GPS isn’t always 100% accurate.  Luckily, Foursquare will let you edit your perceived location to match your physical location, a feature that Facebook Places currently does not have.

    Internet companies often start as one business and morph into another as customer usage, feedback and external business forces.  The look and feel and purpose of both services will probably be much different next year.  Foursquare started as a stand-alone company focused solely on where young people meet, namely bars and restaurants.  Foursquare wanted you to be able to know where your friends are so you can “hook up” in person.  Facebook, is the social “everything”, and will probably be very similar to Foursquare as it grows in the coming years.

    Which service is for you?    If you are a Facebook junky, go with Places.  If you would like to join another community of friends, get off the Facebook grid and try out the Foursquare scene.  Or if you can’t decide, get your GPS phone and try both!


  5. Twitter Can’t Keep Up With Facebook

    The “network effect” is a phrase that is used to describe systems whose value is based on the total number of users. Take the fax machine, for instance. You may have the newest or best model available but if no one else uses one, your fax machine becomes useless.
    The network effect is the reason why many chat rooms have disappeared. Not enough people were using these chat rooms which is why they closed down. However, two online services that are currently benefiting from the network effect are Facebook and Twitter. At present, Facebook has over 150 million users who use the service to connect with old friends, discover new ones and hook up with the right people.
    At second place is Twitter, which has more than 30 million users. Twitter is a mini version of Facebook except that the length of information you can share with others is limited. In this social networking service, people send out updates that are no longer than 140 characters each. Unlike Facebook, the most you can do with Twitter is share status updates. This is why it doesn’t come close to Facebook in terms of the network effect.
    Twitter also doesn’t allow users to share extensive photo albums, or display a lengthy profile.  Facebook also provides groups and a chat feature, which twitter lacks. It’s up to you which one you like better, but in my opinion Twitter just can’t seem to keep up with Facebook.


  6. Facebook Founder and CEO to Donate $100 Million to Newark Public School System

    The New York Times recently unveiled that Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, will be donating $100 million to the Newark, New jersey public school system as part of a foundation intended to help improve educational systems within the United States. The Newark school system has a long history of funding and performance problems.

    Zuckerberg, who was recently named the 35th wealthiest American by Forbes, will make the announcement on The Oprah Winfrey Show alongside Newark Mayor Corey Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

    A new movie about the origins of Facebook, called The Social Network, is scheduled to open in theaters in October. Many are speculating that Zuckerberg’s donation is strategically planned given that the film portrays him in a less than favorable light. Zuckerberg has openly critiqued the films portrayal of his character. Additionally, Facebook has come under fire from critics regarding its privacy violations.
